FACES OF BOGOTA This is my latest acquaintance (discovery rather). I made it at the neighborhood grocery store next door from my apartment. As I dropped by to buy my exotic fruits today (granadillas, papayas, guavas you name it) I got to know Don Francisco (Pacho), a very knowledgeable resident of the barrio, with whom I struck up a conversation over everything under the sun much to the bemusement of Antonio (Chucho) and his sidekick, the two store attendants. Don Franciscos stories opened up to me a window to the history of Colombia and transformed the humble grocery store into a lecture hall of sorts. Here is a sample of his talk on pre-Colombian tribes of this part of the Americas. Ladies and gentlemen, meet my latest friend and teacher, Don Francisco of Candelaria, Bogotà, a figure right from a tableau by El Greco.
