:” FACTORS FOR EFFECTIVE CAMPAIGN ORGANISER SCHEME”. PAPER PRESENTATION BY GODSON AZU Introduction: On this paper presentation one would be looking at the brief definition of a campaign organiser and that of a Trainee campaign organiser from the political perspective , with regards to the functionality and expectations thus, there are various forms of campaign organising that have different out-puts in terms of their end results. In the paper we would be looking at some of the few factors that could contribute to the success of a campaign scheme and any political party “One Nation” philosophy towards the next coming elections from 2014-2015, by taking into consideration the concept of political behaviour and what could be called “Attitude and Behaviour Circle Model” as it impacts the political communication process of a campaign organising scheme. Further on we would then look at the key skill-sets and personal qualities that would be required for an effective and efficient campaign organiser, with regards to deliverable expectations of a well coordinated campaign scheme. A Campaign Organiser: A Campaign Organiser is the person that co-ordinates and organises the campaign structure and action plans, including its communication process, by finding the right message , targeting such messages to the right voters through a consistent approach to out-reach. While a Trainee Campaign Organiser could be a person who is under-studying the fundamental principles of campaign organising. The concept of political behavior: The concept of political behavior is coined form two words namely politics and behavior. It refers as often to a set of methods or research perspectives namely the scientific study of politics as to a subject of study that is built around human behavior in a political context. Political behavior as a methodological approach to the study of politics effectively emerged after the Second World War as a kind of protest movement by some political scientist based mainly in the United States of America against the historical-philosophical and descriptive institutional orientation of traditional political studies. The political behavior approach basically introduced two major elements to the study of politics. First was the emphasis on the political behavior of the individual person as the central and crucial unit of political analysis and the basic building block of scientific study of political science. Second was the emphasis on the scientific study of politics which allows for empirical verification through the use of sophisticated research methods. Attitudes and behaviour circle On the diagram above one could see the flow of impact, in view of a campaign organiser or volunteer’s actions on the campaign plan and the targeted voters. Attitude and behaviour are very important characteristic element of good political communication skills; given the facts that an individual attitude directly affects his/her behaviour, and as such transmits to the attitude of the intended voters, which in-turn reflects on the voter’s positive response and behaviour on casting his/her vote. Base on these principles one would be expected to bring into the Campaign Organising Scheme a positive and assertive behavioural approach to community and campaign engagement. Although, in view of this would come in place the following skills and personal qualities that one would have acquired. Skills and Personal Qualities: 1. Being Enthusiastic and Self-Motivational 2. Having a strong Political-Will and good knowledge of the Labour Party 3. An excellent Administrative and Organisational skills 4. A good knowledge of Basic IT skills 5. A good Inter-personal relationship and sound communication (Oral and Writing)skills 6. Strong Determination and the Willingness to work long hours and meeting targets. Skills and Quality Table. Deliverable Expectations (Contributions): These are areas of strong focus in any campaign structure. Researching Methodology: As a Trainee campaign organiser one of the key essential contributions that I would be brining to the party campaign scheme , would be in the area of “Research “ which is the very first step in any campaign strategy. By following the party strategy and applying my research skills, such as ‘Qualitative’ and ‘Quantitative’ methods to be used for making findings on the following factors; 1. What is the Type of election and what are the Rules? (Parliamentary, Council, Mayoral and European Parliament) 2. What are the characteristics of the Regions or Constituencies? 3. What are the characteristics of the Voters? 4. What has happened in past Elections? 5. What are the main factors affecting this Election? 6. What are the Strengths and Weaknesses of your candidate? 7. What are the Strengths and Weaknesses of all the viable opponents? Planning and Organizing: Every local campaign structure requires a good planning and organizing system that would enable it function and reach its goals, in view of this one would need to bring in an added value to the following factors; these are the main components for creating a local organization that is strong, dynamic and effective; Preparation, Recruitment and Contact, while connecting each component must be completed to keep the local organization potent. Preparation: before recruiting volunteers for the campaign’s local organization, as a team member of the Campaign Organizer scheme you would have to help and support the decisions on the expectations of the recruited volunteer precinct leadership and the organizational structure, such as; the Door-Door canvassing, electoral units and polling stations monitoring which requires volunteers leadership in each unit. Recruitment: On recruitment drive I would bring in a determined and spirited effort on canvassing and recruitment of members/volunteers, at the same time helping to increase the speed of information, campaign attendance and collation of data. Also important would be to support party local /national membership drive, by ensuring that a regular follow-up of both new and old members through home-calls, phone and email contacts, in order to sustain and retain membership. Contact: On the maintenance and sustainability of voters contact list, which is a vital tool in campaign strategy, your contribution would be to work on improving the process of local campaign voters contact list, so as to accomplish the use of it for the persuasion of targeted voters, identifying of supporters and turning-out vote in the region and constituency. By working with an effective voters contact list as a campaign organizer you should be able to help in identifying the number of supporters for the party, and those who have been persuaded to support/vote for the candidate and party at the election, thus ensuring victory for the party. Communication: All campaigns no matter the purpose must consistently communicate a strong “Persuasive” message to the electorate who will or are unwilling to vote, which is the “The Golden Rule” of politics. In view of these using your communication skills which are very vital at this point, within the campaign team you would work to ensure that the following campaign deliverables are achieved; a) The campaign persuasive message are effectively communicated with a clear idea of the intended voter, through the campaign communication process, and at the same time over-coming every limitation of a communication block, such as ; emotional feelings, environmental/cultural differences, attitudes and values. b) A political campaign is a communication process, and as such all campaigns have three basic resources available to accomplish this communication process, which are Time, Money and People; called the “Rule of Finite Resources”. As a Campaign Organizer, you would ensure that through the best possible combinations, the three resources are effectively utilized without any form of wastefulness on achieving the set-targets. Conclusion: In view of the fact that the purpose of the Campaign Organizer Scheme , is to build a strong campaign structure around the parties core values and electoral principles, with a committed team of individuals that would work hard to project and re-establish the party among voters for electoral victories. Thus, with an understanding of what the Labour party stood for which are for, Social Justice, Strong Values, Strong Community and Equal Opportunities. I will be brining to the campaign scheme a strong spirit of commitment ,dedication, attitude to learn, positive behavior, an enthusiastic mind, passionate believe and a charismatic communication. These qualities would be proven through-out my training process and on-the-job assessment periods. Keep listening to Freevoiceradio on freevoiceradio
