[FAN FIC] Book 1 Chapter 1: MAMA There once was a terrible war on the planet Earth. The people who inhabited it bore a weapon from its bounty, a bomb that trembled the light of the stars beyond. Caught in the unnatural cloud of force was a piece of Earth. It was composed of a medley of materials, the stuff of all living and nonliving things past, dissolved and bonded by the precious drops of water embedded within. The great thundercloud hurled this chunk of soil out of the atmosphere and into space, where the only wind is the flaming waves of icy sunlight. It flew on invisible wings as if guided by a hidden mind, disappearing and reappearing as it crossed the scattered patterns of its distant heavenly companions, in slow motion it seemed, until the shock of the blast had healed over. When all was quiet, something awoke inside the small piece of Earth. In the floating egg of rock was a seed. It was damaged by the violent blast, but still it clung to Life. Ready to begin a journey, it opened its shell and reached out as a two-pronged network of branches and roots: one half to catch the rays of energy from the sun, the other to collect the passing stardust along its ever-stretching path. By the time the little unit reached the edge of the solar system, it had grown to be an impressive tree on its own handsome planet. A beautiful thing! But loneliness soon followed. So the tree looked within herself and her home—the soil from the distant Earth was rich with information. The remains of the mysterious menagerie native to Earth were encoded in its minerals, from which she was inspired to create a dazzling array of critters and things old and new to inhabit her land, including a creature according to the model of a human. One by one, she sprung twelve angelic children from her roots. Each of the brothers was born in association with an element she carried from her land of origin. From the strength of the earthen soil rose steady D.O. amongst the varied minerals. The water on her planet’s surface gathered to bring forth patient Suho. The child Sehun materialized from the gentle wind about her leaves. The glowing pulse of a stone hearth’s flame gave life to bold Chanyeol. Some drops of sunlight captured in the tree’s broad branches came together to form shining Baekhyun. Dancing in and out of view came passionate Kai from the flickering images of constellations beyond the humble globe. The tree’s magic was not yet finished! There was Kris, the power of gravity giving way to his existence. Chen was born of the electricity built up in the little planet’s core. Frost crystallized Xiumin in the planet’s shadowy side, a creation warm and bright enough to balance the energy out. The tree would revive the flowers that grew travel weary at her roots now and then; amongst the healed ones she bloomed peaceful Lay. With two rotations of the earthy sphere in relation to the distant moon, Tao’s creation was duly charted. And finally, Luhan was born from the great tree’s own mind. The children called the Tree of Life, their great mother and goddess, MAMA. She called their humble home, the mound of soil exiled from the solar system, EXOplanet. Her beloved children would then be known as EXO. It was an ideal existence for the family adrift the currents of space. But it was not one that could sustain itself forever. The farther EXOplanet floated form its place of origin, the thinner the life-giving sunlight shone, the sparser the nourishing stardust became. MAMA foresaw the gradual death that was to come if she stayed on the current course. She, her children, and their home would be doomed to fade into nothing, the void of space engulfing the little miracle born of destruction on Earth. A few of her leaves were already falling as shimmering tears onto her roots. She looked upon her twelve precious children with sorrow deeper than the galaxy’s width. There was only one possible way to save them, and with a lot of luck, perhaps herself as well? She read in the rocks at the planet’s core that there was hope on Earth, their true land of origin. There, life and knowledge flourished on a self-sustaining cycle that this isolated chunk of soil, however beautiful, could never replicate on its own. One by one, she wrapped her children in the comfort of sleep. The journey ahead of them would be too long and confusing for their innocent souls to handle in a conscious state; moreover, she could not give them a chance to disobey her heartbreaking will. Through dream, she gave them all this simple mission: “My beautiful children, please learn the ways of your new home. I cannot support this life much longer. If you discover a cure for my situation, I will be even more proud and grateful for you than I already am. But if you do not succeed, which I do not expect you can, then you must create lives for yourselves on this planet called Earth. Live well, live happily, and it shall be as good as though I am living with you. You will either return to EXOplanet as heroes, or you will not burden your delicate hearts with the pain of looking back. Understand? Do not be afraid. I am not powerless quite yet; when you are ready, I will give you a sign. Goodbye my darlings! My love will always be with you…” And with that, the great tree summoned all the energy she had gathered along her starlit odyssey. Her babies must land safely before waking up, and Earth is a long way back. She had given them, and herself, the dangerous gift of hope, but she knew that she would probably never see her children again. With the reserves of her dwindling strength, she sent EXO, one by one, Earthbound…. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ So...yep! This is my take on the EXO mythology, starting with the EXOplanet genesis. 8D Hope you enjoyed it, and please look forward to Chapter 2 next week!
