~ FAO Farmers, a good wee article...For farmers, the potential loss of EU subsidies is a big worry, with a dependency on them paramount to survival esp. in the current economic climate. As it stands Scotland is allocated EU money, which is handled (badly), negotiated (badly) and distributed (unfairly) by Westminster... It angers me (&many many more) that, as a result of the low levels of payment Scotland receives from elsewhere in the common agricultural policy, a staggering £190million was granted last year by the EU to balance this deficit in Scotland, however in Westminsters infinite wisdom, Scottish agriculture only received a merger 16% of that money... As Richard Lochhead, Rural Affairs Secretary said this goes against the intentions of the EU, against the wishes of this Parliament and it takes away from Scottish farmers and crofters resources on which their livelihoods depend. Only with a YES vote Scotland can negotiate on her own behalf (direct payments & development funds) at crucial EU negotiations, and be safe in the knowledge that all of the money received will be distributed within Scotland to Scottish farmers and crofters... (UKIP & Labour will likely join tories in voting out of EU)
