FAQ Friday: Do i need to worry about altitude sickness? For those going to the Inca Project: Whilst youre in Huyro, you do not need to worry too much about altitude sickness. Huyro is at around 1600 m above sea level, so you may find yourself getting a little more tired quicker than usual at the beginning (and perhaps more hungry!), but you should not really feel anything stronger than that. For Cusco and the Sacred Valley: Whilst out walking in the hills, you may get higher (around 3,000m) and when you visit Cusco and the Sacred Valley you will be at 3400m and 2900m respectively. In these places you will feel the difference (heavier breathing than usual (youll feel really unfit!), tiredness, maybe a light headache), but most people dont tend to actually get altitude sickness at this height. You should listen to your body, take it easy and drink plenty of water. You may also feel you have less of an appetite, but try to eat little and often and avoid heavy, difficult to digest foods (such as red meat) for a little while. In the unlikely event that you experience any of the more serious symptoms (vomiting, dizziness etc), please let your supervisor (or us on the emergency number) know if it happens whilst away, so you can seek medical advice.
