FAQ Series 4 of 6: Why Are Certifications Important And What’s The Difference? Your trainer should always have a certification to train clients, period! A certification conveys that the trainer is serious about delivering scientifically proven methods to help you reach your goals. The reason there are so many certifications available is that someone decided they had something more accessible to more people so I’ll start one myself (just my own opinion). Have no doubt that the highest certification a trainer can have is through the NSCA with the Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and SCCC with the Collegiate Strength & Conditioning Coaches association (CSCCa). Either of these certifications is required to coach in the college and professional ranks; anything less than these two certifications can be lumped together as amateur certifications. After the certification criteria comes the experience factor. Keep in mind that, as hard as it is to obtain the CSCS or CSCCa certifications, not all holders are experienced enough to build a training program. I was fortunate to have great experience and know-how to build a program combining my playing experience on the college level, my business start up in 2001 with training successful AAU track athletes, and training a NCAA team to a championship in 2008 before earning my certification. Always check the background of your trainer before signing on; it can save you time, money, and pain. This is not a scientific research article; it’s an explanation of experience for those looking for results.
