FAST TRACK PRIVATE SECTOR POLICY, LOBBY GROUP URGES: The Tanzania Private Sector Foundation (TPSF) has urged the government to fast track the process to get the National Private Sector Development Policy for the country’s development. TPSF executive director Godfrey Simbeye told journalists over the weekend in Dar es Salaam that it is important for the policy to be ready by the end of this month for the benefit of the sector and the country at large. “It is our hope that all concerned stakeholders will be fully involved,” he said. Currently, discussions are ongoing among stakeholders on the Draft Private Sector Development Policy. The executive secretary of the Tanzania National Business Council (TNBC), Mr Raymond Mbilinyi, said that although there are many challenges ahead, a lot have been achieved in developing the private sector in the country. “We have to strengthen the sector for the benefit of Tanzanians,” he said. He said the aim of the government through TNBC is to have a policy that will make it possible to bring the sector to a higher level and make the country’s business climate more competitive. A successful entrepreneur in the country and the chairman of Infotech Investment Group, Mr Ali Mufuruki, said the time for Tanzania to have a strong policy to guide the private sector is long overdue. “Every country gives priority to its citizens, this should be the same here,” he said, adding that neighbouring Kenya and Uganda started earlier in developing their private sectors and have now reached a higher level. The government has been implementing far reaching reforms since the mid-1980s with the view to creating enabling investment climate for private sector development so as to anchor the sector as the engine of economic growth. He said it was imperative for the on going reforms to ensure the country has a robust and predictable policy, legal and institutional framework for promoting investment and private sector development just like in Malaysia, Singapore, South Africa and Australia.
