FEAR What is a fear? Fear wears many faces. Psychologists defined fear as an emotional response to a perceived threat. It is a basic survival mechanism occurring in response to a specific stimulus, such as pain or the threat of danger. The Bible mentions two specific types of fear: 1. The fear of God this type is beneficial to us and is to be encouraged. “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endures for ever. The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” (Psalm 111:10; Proverbs 1:7). This type of fear does not necessarily mean to be afraid of something. Rather, it is a reverential awe of God; a reverence for His power and glory. However, it is also a proper respect for His wrath and anger. In other words, the fear of the Lord is a total acknowledgement of Whom God is which comes through knowing Him and His attributes. Fear of the Lord brings with it many blessings and benefits. It is the beginning of wisdom and leads to good understanding. Furthermore, fear of the Lord leads to life, rest, peace, and contentment, and provides a security and a place of safety for those that know Him. With all these benefits, you can see why fearing God should be encouraged. 2. The second type of fear is a detriment and it as to be overcome. However, the second type of fear mentioned in the Bible is not beneficial at all. This is the “spirit of fear” mentioned in the Bible: “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7). A spirit of fearfulness and timidity does not come from God. It is of the devil Trust God for everything you want to do, believe that with God all things are possible. Apostle Paul says, “I can do all things through Christ that strengthen me” Phil 4:13
