FEATURED COMPOSER NO.6 - DERMOT MCDERMOTT Dermots piece for #FREESTATE8 is called Chivaree for Violin, Cello, Clarinet, Flute & Piano. Dermot was born in Sligo, educated in Galway, and later went on to study mathematics at Trinity College Dublin, thereafter pursuing a number of diverse career paths in the diplomatic and business consultancy spheres. He studied classical guitar at the Royal Irish Academy and guitar, lute and composition at the DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama in Dublin where he obtained a B.Mus degree. As a postgraduate, he studied composition with Grainne Mulvey, and also at the Irish Composition Summer School with tutors Martin OLeary, Kevin OConnell and Nicola LeFanu. During this period he also completed a commissioned work for cello and piano entitled A Peace Worth Willing for cellist Martin Johnson, which was performed in April 2010. In 2013, he was awarded an M.Phil by the Dublin Institute of Technology on submission of a composition portfolio. Future activities as a composer include researching and exploring the use of early instruments for contemporary works, and the controlled acoustical enhancement of performance spaces using long string installations. crashensemble/events/2014/free-state-8
