It experiments with the installation or location of artworks in architectural space that is progressively altered by other artists work when one group replaces another. It is called ‘FERAL’ because its progressive overlapping nature is a slightly feral form of exhibition practice (and because it also sounds like its earlier version, ‘FAIR ISLE’). The ‘FERAL/FAIR ISLE’ project is part of the broader interest by Articulate in the relationship artworks form with their location. The project does this by focusing on the contribution that the changing installation of artworks makes to the constitution of a site. Over time, around 60 artists have the opportunity to experiment with the location of artwork in an architectural space that (with the exception of the artists who started the process) is already altered by the earlier installation of other artists work, which will be altered again when another group replaces that earlier installation. The ‘FERAL’ progression starts with ‘FERAL 1’, which is the mix of the first two weeks of installation. On Monday after the ‘FERAL 1’ opening, the first weeks group will de-install and a third group of artists will install their work in the project space among the work of the second group, to produce ‘FERAL 2’. This progressive process continues each week until it concludes on Sunday 8 February when ‘FERAL 5’ ends. Five separate openings, each on Friday from 6 to 8pm, are scheduled on 9, 16, 23, 30 January, and 6 February.
