FIGHTING PLANS TO BUILD HOMES ON LEEDS GREEN BELT Yorkshire Evening Post Angry residents are fighting plans that could see almost 1,000 homes built on green belt land. The controversial project, proposed by Leeds City Council, could see hundreds of homes built around the Long Causeway, Tile Lane, Dunstarn Lane and Back Church Lane areas of Adel – a plan which is fiercely opposed by nearby homeowners. Resident Manu Chopra said: “Whilst we understand the council is obliged to make provision for housing needs, Adel residents are deeply troubled and baffled by the fact there’s no clear, defensible reason for building on the green belt site at Dunstarn Lane. “If development is approved at this site, it will set a dangerous precedent for further destruction of green belt land, which is such a defining characteristic of Adel and many other parts of Leeds.” A public consultation is being held into the plans, which ends on Monday, July 29, and councillor Barry Anderson (Cons, Adel and Wharfedale) is urging residents to have their say. Dunstarn Lane resident Julian Larkin said: “One of the things that drew me here was the green space. If we start losing that, it would be an awful shame.” Greg Mulholland, MP for Leeds North West, added: “There are brownfield sites that would be preferable and I would urge the council to make these sites a priority.” The project is part of the council’s Site Allocations Plan, designed to ensure sufficient land is available for housing. Coun Peter Gruen, executive board member responsible for neighbourhoods, planning and support services, said: “To help plan for anticipated population changes and the homes, jobs, education and investment needed, we had to identify potential sites which could provide development opportunities. We’re seeking as much land as possible from brownfield sites and sites with planning permission but having done this we still have a substantial gap.”
