FILIPINOS IN IRAQ REGISTER FOR 2016 NATIONAL ELECTIONS 19 May 2014 - Husband and wife Crispin Espejo Calvez and Gina Cabintoy-Calvez became the first Filipinos to register as overseas voters for the 2016 national elections at the Philippine Embassy in Iraq. They took the opportunity to register while applying for a new passport for their newly-born son. Mr. Calvez works as Human Relations Officer at a construction firm, Harlow International. The Embassy has so far registered a total of 52 Filipino voters in Baghdad and at the Green Zone where it made its first mobile registration. Philippine Ambassador to Iraq Edsel P. Barba, who led the mobile registration, encouraged the Filipinos to “spread the news to the other Filipinos in Iraq, especially those in Kurdistan and Basra, where the Embassy will launch its mobile registration every other month starting end of May 2014 up to October 31, 2015, the last day of registration.” The overseas voters registration is open to all Filipinos who are at least 18 years of age. They have to register personally for the capture of their biometrics and electronic signature, and to bring with them the original or photocopy of their Philippine passport. Registered overseas Filipino voters will be allowed to vote for President, Vice President, 12 Senators, and 1 Party-list Representative during the Philippine national elections in 2016. END
