FILM CENSORSHIP – NECESSARY EVIL OR UNNECESSARY? Film - TopicsExpress

FILM CENSORSHIP – NECESSARY EVIL OR UNNECESSARY? Film censorship in India has always been a problematic issue, complicated more by the democratic and spaces of freedom that the country’s supreme Constitution bestows upon her citizenry. The institutionalized (as also politicized) ‘censorship’ has its own history dating from the colonial times till now – and over the time technology has made the situation more and more complex and difficult for the forces of control. And as spaces for human ‘freedom’ of feelings are broadened, there are shrinkages too through certain human tendencies largely emerging from a sense of insecurity. A couple of years back i had attended some of the sessions of the conference on censorship organized by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) in Delhi at Siri Fort – as part of the celebrations of Indian cinema’s centenary. Most of the views were in support and stricter enforcement of censorship, some were reformatory. Post-recent film CBFC controversy - i personally think it is about the constitution of the board, which is largely political, and about a specific film and not essentially about the philosophy of censorship. Also most of the ongoing debate about film censorship on social media or elsewhere is towards perpetuating it. Should we still view it as the necessary evil or unnecessary? Here is one of our most senior and eminent filmmakers, Mr Shyam Benegal’s take on film censorship to review our views on this issue at this moment. - AG https://youtube/watch?v=XFHkH6PkpXg
