FIRED Generations actors have taken the fight against their bosses - TopicsExpress

FIRED Generations actors have taken the fight against their bosses a step further. They’re trying to open a can of worms! On Thursday the lawyer representing the actors, Bulelani Mzamo, filed court papers at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA). Mzamo said the conciliation process will start soon. The CCMA and the Labour Court will have to determine whether actors are employees or contractors. All 16 actors have signed referral documents with him. They claim they have been unfairly dismissed and are demanding reinstatement. “The fact is they are not doing it for themselves but for the common good of all actors,” said Mzamo. On Friday the Generations Actors Guild (GAG) issued a statement confirming legal action. This after the principal cast of Generations have been dismissed following their withdrawal of service on 11 August. Actors have issued a statement which reads: . . . we have engaged with our former employer and (have) been clear about the fact that we are open to negotiations and discussions. But (we) were resolute in our commitment to transforming unfair industry practices. That resolve remains unshaken, and in light of our employer’s stance, we have now filed the issue with the CCMA. They thanked Cosatu, the Creative Workers Union of South Africa, fellow actors and fans for their “unflinching support in these troubled times”. Meanwhile, the SABC has announced a change in the channel’s schedule due to the ongoing standoff. Their statement said Generations won’t be screened from 1 October right through to December to allow for the recording of new episodes. According to the statement, the public broadcaster will replace Generations in the 8pm time slot with the third season of the drama series, Skeem Saam. “Generations’ repeat slot on SABC3 at 10.30am will be replaced by Muvhango,” said SABC’s group communications officer Kaizer Kganyago. He appealed to members of the public to be patient. Meanwhile, Seputla Sebogodi, also known as “Kenneth Mashaba”, has rubbished rumours that he has pulled out from the group. When the SunTeam asked him for a comment, Kenneth growled: “Let me tell you, I’d rather die with them than pull out! “I’m with my colleagues all the way even if it means getting fired.”
