FIRST CM CONVICTED WHILE IN OFFICE::: AMMA GOES TO JAIL In a 18 year old corruption case Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa convicted under the Prevention of Corruption Act and sentenced to 4 years in prison for accumulating unaccounted wealth disproportionate to her known sources of income between 1991 and 1996. The special court judge also imposed a fine Rs 100-crore fine (approx 20 million USD.). Born in 1948 Jayalalithaa Jayaram commonly referred to as Amma (mother), is an Indian politician and a Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu since 2011. Previously she held the office of CM from 1991 to 1996, briefly in 2001, again from 2002 to 2006. She was a popular regional film star in the state of Tamil Nadu. She acted in more than 140 films in Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada language films. She has a huge fan following. Her grandfather was in the service of the Mysore kingdom as a surgeon, and the prefix Jaya (the victorious) was added to the names of various family members to reflect their association with Maharaja Jayachamarajendra Wodeyar of Mysore.
