FISHING REPORT The dream run of weather continues with the forecast for this weekend for settled conditions. Another bonus is an extra day off to make the most of it. Over the last week the inshore fishing has improved with a few more keep-able snapper around 35 cm. There are some small snapper being caught. It is important to handle these with care if they are going to survive. Minimal handling is the key, and quick return to the water. Getting the hook out quickly and carefully is important. There are some big tarakihi to be caught in 35-45 metres, and these are in good condition. Sometimes when you anchor on a spot that you think will be good fishing, there can be no action for 20 minutes. Just when you are thinking of moving on the tarakihi will start biting. Finding tarakihi on the reef or the sand using your depth sounder, you are looking for average sign with not too much colour in it. White salt-like signals are the best. Having your sounder set on low power is important so that you dont alarm the fish. Anchoring well forward of the sign and drifting back to just before the boat is over the fish. sets you up with the best chance of catching them. You need to take into account the wind and current on the day. Sometimes you may have to lift and reset the anchor to get it right. Catch of the week this week was a 50 kg hapuka caught by Hugh Ensor while on an overnight fishing trip to Tuhua (Mayor Island). Hugh has been a keen fisherman for many years but this is the biggest hapuka he has ever caught. There were also bass, bluenose and gemfish caught on that trip, fishing at a depth of 250-300 metres. The bottom fishing around Tuhua has been particularly good. It is well worth the trip to experience the fishing out there. Other catches in the shallower water close to the Island have been snapper, trevally, porae, kahawai, blue cod, pink maomao and tarakihi. Photo 1 Rob caught a hapuka and bluenose.
