FIT TIP #1: Dont ever trust the calories burned and HR on cardio equipment OR workout games. Why? Take this example: ~One 22 y/o guy weighs 188.7 lbs and has 8% body fat. (Guy A) ~Another 22 y/o guy weighs 188.7 lbs and has 16% body fat. (Guy B) ~Both run at 5 mph on a treadmill for 30 mins. Guy A would burn MORE calories then Guy B, because of this: -LBM:FM Ratio ~Guy As Fat Mass is 15.09 lbs and Lean Body Mass (LBM) is 173.61 lbs. ~Guy Bs Fat Mass is 30.19 lbs and LBM is 158.51 lbs. ~The more LBM you have the more calories burned per hour at REST. ~The less LBM you have the less calories burned per hour at REST. ^ This is called your Basal Metabolic Rate or BMR. -BMR is how many calories you burn per day if you were laying in a hospital bed all day doing nothing. -BMR can be adjusted for activity level by multiplying by a multiplier. -Heart Rate ~The heart rate used on cardio equipment is NOT accurate AT ALL. ~To find your MAX Heart Rate or MHR take 220-Age = MHR ~Then to find training zones multiply by the % of the rate you want to achieve in that zone. ~Pulse should ALWAYS be taken on your wrist. During workout/cardio it is OK to use your neck BUT may be slower than actual HR. This was your FIT TIP for the week! Markus Susko, NASM-CPT
