FIVE THINGS TO KNOW TODAY (10/24/2014) Your Post-Bulletin connection to late-breaking news, upcoming events and stories that will be talked about today: HOMELESS PROJECT A state housing agency has awarded $11 million in funding for what would be Rochesters first apartment complex for homeless families and youth to be built near the formerly Gage East Elementary School in northwest Rochester, officials say. Securing financing was seen as a key hurdle in building the three-story, 55-unit facility, and the award by Minnesota Housing Finance Agency puts the project on track for completion in summer 2016. SAND MINE A zoning change could lead to expanded sand and gravel quarry operations near a residential area in Cascade Township, and some township residents aren’t happy. Milestone Minerals has 140 acres of land near 55th Street Northeast and Highway 63, and the company is looking to expand its quarry operation to the north of its current quarry. At a township Planning and Zoning Commission meeting Tuesday night, neighbors expressed concerns about noise, dust, impacts on the nearby Zumbro River and effects on property values. HASSLER THEATER The final run at the Jon Hassler Theater began Thursday with the first of 27 comedy shows called Dont Hug Me Were Married. The doors will close for good on Nov. 23. The impending closure of the popular theater was announced last November by Rural America Arts Partnership CEO Dean Harrington, who operates the Plainview facility. However, a number of significant developments have occurred since then. SCHINDLER FUNERAL Certainly with tears but also a lot of laughter, stories and joy, Austin said goodbye Thursday to Dr. Dick Schindler, a longtime doctor, teacher, learner, volunteer, coach and leader. Schindler, 72, a retired family practice doctor, died Saturday in a bicycling accident near his home. LEGISLATIVE DEBATE Legislative candidates tangled over taxes, health care and transportation during debates Thursday evening in Rochester. The debates featured DFL state Rep. Tina Liebling and her Republican challenger Breanna Bly, and Republican Nels Pierson and DFLer Rich Wright. The debates were sponsored by the League of Women Voters, the Post-Bulletin and the Rochester Area Chamber of Commerce.
