Mark Dayton’s approval on Tuesday of a $1 billion construction package. Dayton’s sign-off means Rochester’s seven-year quest for state funding to expand its aging civic center is finally a reality. But don’t expect to see construction cranes looming over the building just yet. Assistant City Administrator Gary Neumann said there’s plenty to do before Rochester gets its $35 million from the state. SUPER BOWL REACTION If you build it they will come. That was the message the National Football League sent to Minnesota on Tuesday. The it in this case was a new football stadium. Minnesota obliged as the Vikings are set to enter a sparkling new stadium in 2016. ZIP RAIL Representatives from the Minnesota Department of Transportation and the Olmsted County Regional Railroad Authority presented a Zip Rail update Tuesday morning to the Goodhue County Board. Its one of the first meetings with local government entities to keep them abreast of the ambitious high-speed rail project seeking to connect Rochester with the Twin Cities. Rochester, for example, is scheduled to hear similar details at a June 3 meeting. CITY COUNCIL FILINGS The filing period for the Rochester City Council opened Tuesday, and all incumbents who are up for reelection filed to run for another four-year term. Shaun Palmer will again challenge Mark Hickey for the Fifth Ward seat. Mayor Ardell Brede has held the office since 2003 and is seeking another term. The Austin native previously worked at the Rochester Methodist Hospital and the Mayo Clinic before he was elected mayor. BOARD APPROVES GAGE EAST SALE The Rochester School Board Tuesday approved the sale of Gage East School to a Duluth-based housing developer with plans to build the citys first apartment for homeless families and youth. The $1.3 million sale of the six-acre parcel at 930 40th St. N.W. was a critical hurdle for the Center City Housing Corp., which is proposing to build a 55-unit, three-story building that would house the areas homeless. The vote was 6-0 with board member Dan ONeil absent from the meeting.
