FIVE THINGS TO KNOW TODAY (5/28/2014) Your Post-Bulletin connection to late-breaking news, upcoming events and stories that will be talked about today: REGENERATIVE MEDICINE Millions of state dollars will soon start flowing to Mayo Clinic and the University of Minnesota to support a new regenerative medicine partnership aimed at finding cures for illnesses such as cancer, Parkinsons disease and heart disease. Tucked within a budget bill passed by the DFL-led Legislature this month and signed by Gov. Mark Dayton is $4.5 million for the regenerative medicine partnership and ongoing annual funding of $4.4 million. MURPHY DIED Tom Murphy, a legendary Rochester tavern owner, golf coach and caddie for a U.S. Open champion, has died. While details are still sparse, his family confirms that he died in New York City of an apparent heart attack. It was thought that he went to New York over the holiday week and intended to go the New York Rangers hockey game. KUTZKY PARK HOMES Two historic homes in the Kutzky Park neighborhood may be moved to new locations in order to preserve them as a large apartment building development takes their place. The Kutzky House and Conley House, located at 718 and 810 West Center Street, respectively, could find new homes at the Kutzky gardens and be restored. The lots for the homes’ future sites have been purchased, and sales are set to close on June 15. “Our group has had a vision for Center Street that it would become something of a mixed-use street,” said Dave Edmondson, president of the Kutzky Park Neighborhood Associations board of directors. CROP REPORT As recently as a week ago, many Minnesota farmers were worried about getting their corn planted ahead of a key crop insurance deadline. But theyve been taking advantage of the warm, sunny weather and many had their corn planted by the start of the Memorial holiday weekend. ST. CHARLES COUNCIL The St. Charles City Council got the ball rolling Tuesday night to approve a $2.1 million bond for a new fire hall and ambulance garage. The council heard from members of the community on the need for the new public safety facility. “The least we can do is give them a proper place to train,” said St. Charles resident Dan White. “A place to rest between their runs.”
