FLASHBACK 2004-2008: EMTV – Other projects June 2007: The Governor General Goes to Kokoda In 2007 Sir Paulias Matane was Governor General of Papua New Guinea. He used to conduct regular early morning walks around Port Moresby and he would invited friends from diplomatic missions and business houses to join him. It was on one of these walks that we talked about going to Kokoda. The purpose of the Kokoda visit was to do HIV/AIDS awareness. At the time Helen’s Story was airing, so there was great interest in doing more awareness. We flew by army chopper to Isurava, which is a famous landmark in the WW2 Kokoda campaign. We overnighted there and the Governor-General learnt more about the WW2 campaign. The next day the chopper arrived again and took us to Deniki where we met with the villagers. From there we trekked to Kovelo Village and then on to Kokoda village where the Grand Chief Sir Paulias was made a Paramount Chief. The walk itself was a great feat by the 76 year old Head of State and greater still because it was for a good cause. The event was captured on video and later edited by Joe Sabbath. Festus Maiginap pulled a 30 minute documentary together with an excellent, tight script - narrated by Noreen Dada and presented by Illan Kaprangi.
