FLIRTING WITH FATE BY PREETI SINGH When I started reading this - TopicsExpress

FLIRTING WITH FATE BY PREETI SINGH When I started reading this book to read, being a crime fiction, I wasn’t that interested as the word crime was a kinda downer to me. I started reading unwillingly and realised that narrative is quick, without getting stuck anywhere. After about 15 pages, much to my amazement, I was sucked into the proceedings. The story flows steadily throughout the book and nor did once the reader does feel that it’s dragging which I think is very important to new generation readers who is not fond of literature-laden sentences. Without the use of bombastic words, her narrative touches a chord with the readers. I would not say it is simple, rather standard and sensitive. The USP of FWF is even a seasoned reader could not predict how the story progresses, keeping the reader on tenderhooks right till the end. Preeti should get brownie points for experimenting such a genre in her debut novel itself. I have read simple stories being told in a complicated way, but as for FWF, it is the other way round – a complicated story being narrated in a simple and gripping way. The protagonist Anand is a metaphor of the society we live, characterisation of Anand is the highlight of the book. One may wonder if the love making part is slightly overstretched though the intimate moments are written with panache that clearly defines class instead of crass and love instead of lust. The climax portion does complete justice where Preeti delivers one punch after another and the reader is caught unawares. The character I take home is Aslam Bhai and the dialogue is “he seems to be not affected with the world and with its surroundings. He is so calm and content with life”. As for the con, the sentences in Hindi appearing here and there come across as spoilsport to a non-Hindi reader like me. Last but not the least, this book is well-edited and proofread – something that has become a kinda rarity in scores of books being published nowadays With a strong word of mouth from readers this book is sure to scale up on the sales chart. I go with a 3.5/5 for Preeti Singh’s Flirting With Fate, read it to know how Karma eventually returns. Hope Preeti’s next outing will also be equally interesting. A Renjith Nair review
