FLOOD ADVISORY FOR: Misty Fjords The national weather service in juneau has issued a * Flood advisory for a glacial dammed lake outburst on the salmon river near hyder * Until 500 pm akdt sunday * At 945 am akdt...The salmon river was at a stage of 23.7 feet and has been steadily rising. * A glacially dammed lake release is in progress on the salmon river near hyder. The river did not exhibit its usual diurnal drop wednesday and the river has been reported to be running muddy. The summit lake near the american glacier that is responsible for this event typically drains at the end of july each year. A typical event lasts for 5 days with the highest stages occurring on the third or forth day of the event...That would be saturday or sunday. There are no published flood stage values associated with the automated gage on the salmon river. Residents in the area near the salmon river are requested to report any observed flood impacts associated with this event by calling the national weather service in juneau toll free at 1 8 7 7 8 0 7 8 9 4 3. Rapid rises in water levels on the salmon river are probable over the next several days. All persons with interests near the river or downstream should monitor the water levels over the next several days. The cold water temperatures can increase the threat of hypothermia and lower the time required to cause hypothermia. Remain cautious when in low-lying areas...And report any minor flooding to your law enforcement agency. They will relay your report to the national weather service forecast office in juneau.
