FOLICA PRESIDENT – AMB. BOBBY WHITFIELD REMARKS AHEAD OF LIBERIA’S SPESIAL SENATORIAL ELECTION FRIDAY 19 DECEMBER 2014 My dearest Liberians at home, please lend me your ears. I would like to speak to your hearts ahead of the Special Senatorial Election in Liberia slated for tomorrow, Saturday 20 December 2014. Our sweet mama Liberia is at a crossroad and every Liberian in the diaspora will be watching, the international community will be watching, investors will be watching and the whole world will also watching. Therefore, I call on all Liberians to advance their convictions with civility, to exercise self-discipline, respect, tolerance and refrain from all forms of provocations and violence. I also call on the National Election Commission to facilitate a free, fair, transparent and peaceful election for all Liberians. This election is an opportunity for Liberians to prove to the world that Liberia is indeed the oldest democracy on the continent of Africa as well as send a strong message that Liberia is ready for business, peace, reconciliation and development. The peace Liberia enjoys today was paid for at a very high price, therefore no one will jeopardize this fragile peace and walk with impunity. Furthermore, everyone including the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) must feel diminished if this peace is not protected to the fullest. Liberia, at its best, should be a place where personal responsibility is valued and expected. Liberia’s interest depends on our individual contributions, on civic duty and family bonds and basic fairness and on uncounted acts of decency. Sometimes in life we are called to do great things. But as a saint of our times has said, every day we are called to do small things with great love. Liberian leaders should live and lead by these principles: to pursue the nation’s interest (not an elite few) with courage, to invest in the people, to provide and facilitate opportunities, to empower and encourage greater and active participation of all Liberians in every sector of the Liberian society. In all these ways, the values of human dignity will once again be restored. Liberians are generous and strong and decent, not because we believe in ourselves, but because we hold beliefs beyond ourselves. Unfortunately, Liberians dreams, hopes, expectations and aspirations have never been taken seriously by past and present leaderships, instead corruption, nepotism, tribalism, elitism, impunity, neglect etc… have always eclipsed Liberia’s leaderships. Tomorrow you are faced with the choice of choosing, as the ultimate decision makers, between the candidate of the “establishment” and others! The decisions you make at the polls tomorrow is as important as determining whether or not your standard of living has improved over the past nine years. If you sincerely think so, then vote for the candidate of the “establishment”, to protect and perpetuate the status quo but if you honestly think otherwise then vote for change. This is my honest piece of advice. Wishing all a peaceful election. Long live Liberia. Thank you.
