FOOD FOR THOUGHT: The idea of talking about dying is a frightening thought for most. Many will do whatever it takes to avoid the topic or situation. Some do not have the luxury to avoid preparing a loved one for dying, and as they are in the middle of the deep dark sea, the only option is to swim. Over time, I have learnt that, from a spiritual point of view, this can be the most precious experience. The Bible teaches us to become like little children, (as they still have the gift of imagination.) This is the story of little “John”, a boy of 7. He just heard in a kind of harsh way that medically, he cannot be cured, as there is nothing the doctors can do for him. He had very little time left. His mom brought him to me, his little shoulders heaving with sobs. I asked to talk to him, knowing that he believed in Jesus, and like any little boy, he also loved animated movies. “So, John, have you seen Aladdin?” “Yes,” he quietly replied. “Do you know that he has a magic carpet?” “Yes.” “Did you know that Jesus also has a magic carpet and we can fly with Him anywhere?” He stopped crying and shook his head. “No, I did not know.” “We can all get onto His carpet now and fly wherever you’d like to go. Would you like that?” “Yes,” he said, starting to smile. “I would like to see lots of animals!” “Well, ok then! Let’s get on this carpet. You can ask Jesus to take you and your mom, me, your sister, your friends, and anyone you’d like, to fly to wherever you want us to go.” We all got onto the carpet, spread our wings, and off we went, arms stretched out wide. We flew over mountains and through tunnels, over rivers and trees. We saw houses and cars and boats. We turned, twisted, and moved in all directions. We went high in the sky and we ducked and dived. We moved up with our arms and down with the arms, ‘flying’ all the time while Jesus was steering. Then we saw the animals. First, we touched the elephant and tickled his bum. We touched a lion, and hugged a lamb; kissed a dolphin and waved at a baboon. Then we flew up high into a tree to watch the giraffe eat leaves, while we pet its head. We also got to grab a naughty monkey and throw it at mom just for fun and we all started laughing. John said it was quite nice, but he wanted to ask Jesus if monkeys could talk in heaven. If they could, he would like to share a room with one. “Oh, and Jesus, could I also have a tamed elephant in my room? Oh, and I’d also like a big, blue room with a big, blue bed, and blue curtains, and a computer. There must also be games and a red bike and one special friend if I may.” John asked me to phone a friend’s mom, so he could also discover flying with Jesus. So I called Brady’s mom and asked her if he would like to share a room with a boy who didn’t want a room of his own, given that he was willing to share an elephant and talking monkey, if Jesus was ok with it. When she confirmed that her Brady would love to share, John got up onto his feet and with a grin that just got bigger, looked around him, visualising his new room with the animals on one side and the furniture on the other. He raised his arms in the air and said excitedly: “You know, Vera… God is soooo awesome and soooo good to me,” He turned to his mom and said “Mommy, I am ready. I just want to go now.” With eyes brimmed with tears, and goose bumps covering every bit of skin, we all felt the Heavenly presence at that special, golden moment. John moved into his new room not long after that. Brady joined him soon afterwards.
