FOOD FOR THOUGHT: True Meaning Read Ecclesiastes 8:1 through 12:14 Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind (Ecclesiastes 12:13). King Solomon was arguably the wisest person who ever lived. When he asked God to give him wisdom, God did not withhold His best from David’s heir. Yet at the end of his life, Solomon’s nearly limitless wisdom brought little comfort. As he examined his life’s pursuits—wealth, knowledge, and wisdom—he found that none of them held any real meaning. Solomon realized that no matter how large his kingdom or how much riches he amassed on earth, he could not take any of it with him when he died. When his spirit left his body, Solomon would be buried in the ground, just as the poorest or most foolish man would. The entire Book of Ecclesiastes would be depressing if not for this one glimpse of hope at the end: Without God, life is meaningless. When we live in the fear of the Lord and in accordance with His plan, we will find the meaning to life. Thought for Today: You will never find fulfillment in life without God.
