FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Hairo Cortes 714-737-1069 [email protected] Orange County Dream Team: Expand Deferred Action to 11 Million While Congress Debates Immigration Reform What: Call to action When: Thursday August 15th 2013 Who: California Immigrant Youth Justice Alliance, Orange County Dream Team California—Today immigrant youth across the nation celebrate the first year of the implementation of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. As the celebrations occur the Orange County Dream Team joins the California Immigrant Youth Justice Alliance, a statewide immigrant youth-led organization, in calling on President Obama to expand the program to all 11 Million undocumented immigrants while Congress debates immigration reform. While Congress debates immigration reform immigrant families are targeted by the largest mass deportation program in history. Every day an average of 1,100 people are deported. This means that every day the Obama administration does not halt all deportations, it deports 1,100 potential immigration reform beneficiaries. “1,100 people are being deported daily. This is not some abstract number or statistic, we’re talking about our friends and neighbors—about our families,” Ramon Campos, Santa Ana resident, said. In fact, at this moment Gurmukh Singh, a Garden Grove resident who fled persecution in India, finds himself in the California City Detention Center away from his wife and his two children. As long as immigrant families like Singh’s keep being separated, an expansion of the Deferred Action program should not be considered Plan B to immigration reform. An expansion of the Deferred Action program needs to happen now while Congress debates immigration reform with a potential pathway to citizenship. “If the president granted DACA for my friends and me, why can’t he do the same for the rest of our families? What do they have to live in fear of persecution and deportation?” Ana Karen Rosal, San Juan Capistrano resident, said.
