FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE January 15, 2015 Contact: Jeff Ebbing Phone: 319-208-5060 SCC Board of Trustees Gives Green Light for New Health Professions Building West Burlington, IA- At its January meeting, the Southeastern Community College (SCC) Board of Trustees gave the go ahead to proceed with construction for the college’s new Health Professions Center to be built on the West Burlington campus. Trustees approved the bid by Bi-state Contracting of West Burlington out of a field of seven submissions. Plans for the facility were developed by DLR Group of Des Moines, SCC’s architect-of-record for the project. SCC President Dr. Michael Ash is happy to award the project to a local firm. “We’re looking forward to working with Bi-State Contracting. Their plan is to employ a number of local subcontractors to help with the project as well, so this will be good for our college, our students, and our area.” The $10 million facility will house all of SCC’s health professions programs, including nursing, respiratory therapy, medical coding and billing, medical assistant, and certified nurse aid. Dr. Ash describes the two-story facility as a sort of virtual training hospital, complete with patient simulation labs, an innovative multimedia classroom equipped with technology designed to accommodate a variety of teaching and learning methods, and an ambulance simulation lab. The center will also feature faculty offices, student study spaces and a coffee bar. Dr. Ash says the new building will enhance student learning and prepare graduates for the demands of working in the cross-functional environment of today’s healthcare facilities. “Centralizing our healthcare programs under one roof will dramatically enhance our existing curriculum through more efficient use of resources, cross-discipline collaboration and sharing of technology,” Ash explains. Preliminary site work on the center is under way. Construction is expected to begin in March, weather permitting. The Health Professions Center is part of SCC’s Building the Dream facility expansion initiative. The initiative is a combination of new construction and renovation of facilities on SCC’s Keokuk and West Burlington campuses. The center is phase one of a new Health and Sciences Complex, which also includes a new building to house science-related labs and facilities. It is the first large-scale comprehensive building initiative undertaken by SCC since the re-construction of the Keokuk campus in the mid 1990’s.
