About BIG: Blacks In Government® (BIG) was established in 1975 and incorporated as a non-profit organization under the District of Columbia jurisdiction in 1976. BIG continues to be a national response to the need for African Americans in public service to organize around issues of mutual concern and use their collective strength to confront workplace and community issues. BIGs goals are to promote EQUITY in all aspects of American life, EXCELLENCE in public service, and OPPORTUNITY for all Americans. BIG annually provides an Oratorical and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) competitions for 9th-12th grade students at the Chapter, Region and National levels. BIG is comprised of over 200 chapters in 11 Regions. Our Region IX consists of 21 chapters from Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada, Guam, and Trust Territory of the Pacific Island, American Samoa. Friday, January 23, 2015 the Region IX Council will host a training program: “Creating a Level Playing Field” addressing Ways Gender Stereotypes create bias against women and Strategies to reduce bias. The training session is scheduled from 6 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Saturday, January 24, 2015 the Region IX Council will hold the first business meeting of 2015. The business meeting is from 8 A.M. to 5 P.M.
