The Global Market & Café Cooperative will be a member owned and operated consumer cooperative dedicated to providing international foods via market as well as serving up international dishes in the cafe. Taking a page from the DeKalb International Market in Atlanta, the Global Market & Café will not only offer GMO free grains but offer spices, teas, coffees, wine , beer and a wide variety of foods from around the world while the café will offer a rotating menu of international dishes inclusding Asian, African and Latin cuisine among others. The Global Market & Café Cooperative (GMCC) is founded on the idea of providing high quality, wholesome and ecclectic foods at reasonable prices to anyone. Membership is not required to patron the market however membership will provide further reduced prices in the market. Membership is open to all. Shares in the cooperative are also available. Melissa Kendrick, the lead organizer of the venture says that “in addition to extended market hours the café will served daily lunches, including vegan and vegetarian options as well as offer lite faire, beer, wine and desserts in the evening. Our plan is for the café also to host international acoustic music in the evenings to offer evening options after a visit to the Alabama Theatre, the Regions Ballpark or other area destinations”. “We know this is a new approach and our organizers are excited to come out and talk to your business, social group or House of Worship and answer questions. As a community owned business we want everyone involved and giving their input. The more people we have supporting the effort the ideas we will have to help the business be unique and meet the expectations of our community owners”, says Kendrick.
