FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE SUBMISSION GRAPPLERS SET TO ROCK CLUB SODA IVAN MENJIVAR HEADLINES VICTORY SUBMISSION DEBUT CARD MONTREAL (QUEBEC) January 20, 2015 – After much lauded success with its Victory MMA and Victory Muay Thai events, Victory Fight Promotions is set to launch its newest brand this Saturday, January 24 in downtown Montreal as they present VICTORY SUBMISSION 1: MENJIVAR VS SANTANA. Based on the company’s past successes, there is little doubt that this, the first of many events in the genre, will rapidly develop a cult following among the metropolis’ fight fans… especially when one considers the incredible main event they will be treated to on this night. LOCAL FAVORITE RETURNS HOME Nicknamed “The Pride of El Salvador”, Ivan Menjivar is a veritable legend of the Montreal combat sports scene. A pioneer of mixed martial arts, Menjivar made his pro debut in 2001, at the young age of 18. He and his peers, names such as David Loiseau, Patrick Côté and Georges St-Pierre, were all key players in creating a local fan base for the sport, making much Montreal a city that was very much ahead of the curve in that regard. He also holds the distinction of being GSP’s first professional opponent. In 2010, he reached the promised land of professional MMA, the UFC, where he made an immediate impact winning his first 3 fights, making him a top contender for the world championship. On Saturday night however, it is his aptitude for Brazilian jiu-jitsu, a sport in which Menjivar holds a brown belt, that will be put to the test when he squares off with Magdo Santana, a black belt. Santana is originally from Brazil and trains with the world famous Brazilian Top Team. These men will write another chapter of the storied BTT vs Tristar (Menjivar’s gym) rivalry as both will not only look to make their teacher’s proud, but also hold the distinction of being victorious in the main event of the Victory Submission debut card. CANADA VS USA In addition to the main event, the co-main event will feature an international incident of its own in the form of a Canada vs USA battle in the Masters division (35 years old and over) as Montreal’s Louis Ho takes on American Shawn Smith. Ho’s list of accomplishments in the sport of Brazilian jiu-jitsu is rivalled by few: from being the only Canadian ever to obtain a black belt from the world famous Eddie Bravo to being a US National Jiu Jitsu champion. Today, Ho teaches, owns and operates the only 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu school in Quebec. With such a reputation, defeat is not an option. Smith however may indeed be one of the few whose successes can rival Ho’s. A black belt from the state of Maine, he has been a BJJ practitioner for close to 12 years. Smith has participated in over 220 matches, medaling in 50 tournaments along the way including 39 first place finishes. Representing The Foundy BJJ as well as the stars and stripes, you can bet he is not making the trip to Montreal to simply tap out. ALSO IN ACTION Fans of local combat sports may be familiar with many names appearing on this Saturday’s card as the athletes are literally lining up to test their grappling skills in this format. From professional MMA fighters Domenic Ruccolo, Robert Seres and Eric Nadon to top ranked amateurs Mathieu Langlais and Collin Baikie, this is truly an all-star card that promises to be a can’t miss event. All matches have a 10-minute time limit except for the main event which is scheduled for a 15-minute time limit. Matches are won by submission only and will be ruled a draw should no winner be determined within the allotted time; there are no judges decisions.
