FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 28, 2014 BC BUILDING TRADES LAUNCHES CAMPAIGN FOR WORKPLACE ACCOUNTABILITY ON NATIONAL WORKERS DAY OF MOURNING VANCOUVER –Today, the BC Building Trades launched a campaign calling for stronger workplace accountability measures to hold corporate executives and directors accountable for cases of negligence causing workplace death or serious injury. The BC Building Trades campaign calls on the Government of British Columbia to pass the Workplace Accountability Act, which was presented in the legislature today by Harry Bains, MLA for Surrey Newton. “A construction site can be a dangerous place when employers are negligent about health and safety, said Tom Sigurdson, Executive Director of the BC Building Trades. Too many workers have been exposed to asbestos, too many workers have died from trauma and not one employer has been held criminally accountable. The Workplace Accountability Act calls for a dedicated Crown Prosecutor and requires police and WorkSafeBC inspectors to be trained on section 217.1 of the Criminal Code, as well as, mandatory police investigations of all workplace fatalities and serious injury cases. This Bill outlines the critical steps that need to be taken in order to successfully investigate and prosecute negligent employers, said Sigurdson. The BC Building Trades is putting our weight behind it to ensure that justice is finally served. Building Trades members will be handing out campaign postcards at Workers Day of Mourning events across the Lower Mainland today.
