FORKLIFT TIRE SPECS Industry and commercial businesses have used forklifts in various forms since approximately 1917. Throughout the years forklift design has evolved from a tractor with a platform attachment to dedicated, specialized machines. Forklift tires are specialized, too; each type provides a particular support and function depending on where and how it is used. Cushion (Solid) Tires >> A cushion tire is a smooth, solid tire. Made from polyurethane or rubber, the tread is bonded or pressed onto a steel ring that forms the tire. You see cushion tires rated for different load capacities, hardness or effort required for steering; they also come in different sizes. Forklifts used for indoor work on smooth surfaces, such as warehouses, use cushion tires. Pneumatic Tires >> Filled with air, pneumatic forklift tires can come as bias or radial. There will be differences in tread depth, weight or sidewall protection depending on your need. Further, foam-filled pneumatic forklift tires protect against punctures and maintain constant pressures. You find pneumatic tires on forklifts normally used outdoors over rough, uneven or "unimproved" terrain. Pneumatic Shaped Solid/Solid Pneumatic >> This hybrid tire has the ride of a pneumatic forklift tire with the puncture resistance of a solid tire; it can replace outdoor-use pneumatic tires. Large Rubber and Flotation Tires >> Wheel loader forklifts use large rubber (pneumatic, foam or solid) tires to transport and load bulk items into processing equipment or onto trucks. Masted rough terrain forklifts use large flotation pneumatic tires at lumberyards, auto recyclers and at construction sites to transport and hoist building materials.
