FORMER IOWA NATIONAL GUARD SOLDIER, AUTHOR TO SPEAK AT IOWA GOLD STAR MILITARY MUSEUM On Thursday, July 18, the Iowa Gold Star Military Museum, located at Camp Dodge, Johnston, Iowa, will host author and former Iowa National Guard soldier Miyoko Hijiki, who will share her personal experience of serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom. The event will be held from 6-8 p.m. Hikiji served as an enlisted soldier for nine years and was deployed 403 days in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003 – 2004. Her job duties included truck driver, unit correspondent and administrative sergeant. During her deployment, she completed over 70 supply convoy, security and raid missions throughout the northwest quadrant of Iraq. Simultaneously, Hijiki wrote a company newsletter, contributed to her support squadron’s newsletter and wrote articles for her hometown newspaper. Her war memoir, All I Could Be: My Story as a Woman Warrior in Iraq, was published in May by History Publishing. Her military decorations include the Army Commendation Medal (with Oak Leaf Cluster), Army Achievement Medal (w/OLC), Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal and Iowa Humanitarian Service Medal. Her transportation company received the second highest unit decoration—the Valorous Unit Award—for extraordinary unit heroism in combat. Hijiki earned Bachelor of Science degrees in journalism and psychology from Iowa State University in 2004. She maintains close ties with her alma mater and was invited by Dr. K.J. Gilchrist to share her essays with the English department’s war literature class during the spring 2010 semester. Hijiki went on to share her writing at the 2010 University of Iowa’s Veterans Writer’s Workshop and returned as an instructor during the Workshop’s 2013 session.
