FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – The 8.7 million pounds of meat recalled from a California company back in February may have reached 35 states now, including Indiana, according to the United States Department of Agriculture website. Rancho Feeding Corp., which has been under scrutiny by the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service, apparently processed diseased and unhealthy animals without a full federal inspection. The products were processed from Jan. 1, 2013, through Jan. 7, 2014. They include beef carcasses, oxtail, liver, cheeks, tripe, tongue and veal bones. In January of this year, Rancho Feeding Corp. recalled more than 40,000 pounds of meat products that also didn’t undergo a full inspection. The products were first believed to have been shipped out to only California, Florida, Illinois and Texas. CNN now reports the products may have reached 35 states and Guam. According to the USDA, the Scott’s located at 10230 Chestnut Plaza Drive and the Scott’s located at 4120 N. Clinton Street both received the meat products. According to John Elliott, media spokesperson for Kroger Central Division, frozen El Monterey Toquitos and frozen Philly Steak and Cheese Hot Pockets were pulled from the shelves immediately after the meat recall in January and February. Despite some media reports, Elliott said Kroger stores in Indiana and Illinois were not impacted by the recall for Kroger brand frozen ground beef patties. That recall was related to the Rancho Beef recall, but only impacted a few stores out west, according to Elliott. Elliott said Kroger’s system notifies all loyalty card customers, which is about 98% of all customer transactions, by e-mail and phone when there is a Class I or Class II recall. The USDA says various stores in Huntington, Warsaw, and Kendallville also received the recalled meat. To see the complete list of stores, click here. The list was last updated on March 4, 2014. Associated Press reports there have been no reports of illnesses so far. An FSIS spokesman said because some of the products could still be frozen and in storage, a Class I recall was issued because the meat product could cause serious, adverse health consequences.
