FRAN --------------KIT OF THE WEEK NO.29: RANGERS HOME 1982-84 August 2, 2014 · by Mark Godfrey · in Kit of the Week · RANGERS HOME 1982-84 The early 1980’s saw Rangers continue their partnership with Umbro and in 1982 they swapped the traditional ‘nipple-scratcher’ material of their late 70’s home shirt for the more synthetic design we see here. Sadly for the ‘Gers, this pin-striped shirt did not inspire the team to greatness. The Ibrox club – along with their Old Firm rivals Celtic – had their dominance of Scottish FOOTBALL challenged by the so-called ‘New Firm’ of Aberdeen and Dundee United. This slump in fortunes eventually led to the appointment of Graeme Souness in 1986 from which point the club experienced a period of unparalleled success. During the 82-84 era Jock Wallace (1983-1984) and John Greig (1981-1982) managed Rangers and both guided their respective sides to a League Cup success but the League and Scottish Cup evaded teams including the likes of Ally McCoist, Davie Cooper, John McClelland and Bobby Russell. This team’s finest hour came in front of 66,369 spectators at Hampden Park in March 1984 when a McCoist hat-trick secured a 3-2 dramatic extra-time victory over Celtic in the 1984 League Cup final.
