FRANKS BENCH FIRE ON NORTH UNCOMPAHGRE PLATEAU Delta, Colo., (August 18, 2013 - 1200 pm) – Interagency resources from the US Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management are suppressing the Franks Bench Fire located 3 miles south of Uranium Road (FSR 404) , and approximately 5 miles south and west of the Divide Forks Campground and ATV Complex. The fire is burning on the Uncompahgre National Forest lands. The Franks Bench Fire was detected on August 16, 2013 and was determined to be caused by lightning from a storm which occurred 5-6 days earlier. When initially detected the fire was approximately 30 acres in size and as of August 18, it has grown to 35 acres. The fire is burning in remote and rugged terrain. Firefighters are working to suppress the fire, but due to the hazardous terrain, suppression and containment will occur in areas which can be safely accessed by firefighters. One Bureau of Land Management (BLM) engine, two (7-8 person) wildland fire crews and miscellaneous support personnel are currently on the fire. No structures are threatened. There are no road or trail closures at this time but the Forest Service is urging the public to avoid the area affected by the fire. This includes trails in the Blue Creek Park area (FST 618, 619,620, 630,632, and 643).
