FREE CONTENT: Two national parks confronted serious damage to historic structures and state officials were assessing damage to Kawaihae Harbor in the wake of persistent waves in the 12 to 18 foot range this week. The concrete wharf at Mahukona Beach Park also suffered weakening from the wave action and appeared to be compromised, county park officials said Friday. Powerful waves continued to beat on West Hawaii shores — the third day of pounding from west-northwest swell that is expected to begin diminishing today but has kept many parks closed. At Kawaihae Harbor, surf tore planks off docks, damaged railings and broke a water line to the restrooms. Erosion caused a paved area to collapse near the head of a ramp, and the road to the harbor was filled with sand which state highway crews removed with excavators on Thursday and Friday. Engineers with the state Department of Land and Natural Resources have yet to determine the cost and timetable for repairs, said DLNR spokeswoman Deborah Ward. Kaloko Road and the beach area at Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park reopened Friday after waves caused extensive damage to the kuapa wall at Kaloko Pond, said Jon Jokiel, acting chief of interpretations for the park. “Over half of the 800-foot wall is in pretty bad shape,” Jokiel said.
