FREE PLANTS ! This free plant giveaway is being made possible by a new community service group called, Quad City Plant Devas, you can find us on facebook under this name. The plants have all been donated by various garden centers and nurseries in the Quad Cities. We asked if instead of throwing them away when they closed their centers could we take them and see that they get to individuals that couldn’t afford to buy them, or had limited ability to acquire them, as well as community gardens and other organizations that provide various forms of assistance to Quadcitians. Most have agreed and are happy to have the alternative option we’ve offered. For the past week, our group has been collecting these plants and working out the details as to how, when and where we would disperse them. The first organized event will be this Thursday, July 10th through Saturday July12th from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. There will be exceptions made for those that can’t make it before 5:00 PM. Use the contact information below. Community service groups, churches, community gardens, or other organizations from either side of the river, interested in acquire some of the plants, please contact us on our facebook page, email to quadcityplantdevas@yahoo or call me, Sheri Houser at 563 424-4862. For those that could normally afford to buy the plants from the different garden centers, we have this offer. In exchange for what we have LOTS of, various tomatoes, peppers, ornamentals and flowers, plus a few other items we will trade one plant we don’t have from you for two of ours. Items like lettuce, cucumbers, and any other vegetable that can still produce from now until fall. See below; Lists, by U.S. region, of which vegetables and herbs you can plant in July. Unless specifically listed as transplants the items in this list can be direct-sown in your garden this month. CENTRAL U.S./MIDWEST Basil Beans Beets Broccoli (Transplants) Brussels sprouts (Transplants) Cabbage (Transplants) Carrots Cauliflower (Transplants) Cilantro Cucumbers Kale Parsley Radishes Summer Squash Swiss Chard Turnips Winter Squash This information was provided by Danny Look on the Edible Landscape facebook page. We also will accept donations of potting materials and containers in exchange. Containers can be anything from your chipped gravy boat to an old boot. If it can hold dirt we can use it from small to large. Tea cups to kitchen sinks (actually have one of those)Plastic 5 gal pails are welcome as well. We’re potting up a variety of items for people with no yards or are unable to get out, for nursing homes and other facilities. The location for this first event is; 4029 Chisholm Trail, The Ponderosa Mobile Home Park off Telegraph RD in West Davenport. I had already planned a yard sale for those dates and now I have a yard full of plants to find homes for the events are combined. Some pictures of a portion of the plants are on our facebook page. I brought in more today and will be doing the same tomorrow. If by some small chance I run out, we have more at 3 other locations plus still getting more from the various garden centers still open. One final note. I need volunteers to help manage the plant dispersal during the days and times listed. Anyone who helps out will get a number of plants for their assistance. We as an organization are barely a week old and most of what has been done so far was with less than a dozen people. We will be growing. After we finish this part, which includes planting beds ourselves, we’ll be giving away any excess produce we have. So, if you don’t want a plant. That’s fine. Wait a few months and we’ll be offering the produce. Thanks, Sheri and everyone who’s part of Quad City Plant Devas. (The name is explained on our facebook page as well as lists of most of the plants we have available.)
