FREE SUMMER EVENTS AT SCAR TOP THE town council’s programme for a festival of free summer events in Barnard Castle is under way. Highlights this year include birds of prey, buskers, medieval re-enactments, acrobats and an event to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War. Cllr Thom Robinson said: “The events we held last year were really well received. We’ve secured the Streets of Durham again this year and I’m sure it will be well received this August. The brass festival is also getting regional promotion for the town.” He praised the town council’s events committee for pulling the line up together. Here is a summary of what’s on (for more details about each event, see the Teesdale Mercury. Well be running something in each week leading up to the event): Saturday, July19: Animal Day. Walworth Castle Birds of Prey will be on show on Scar Top from 11am until 3pm with two flying displays taking place at 11.30am and 2pm. Saturday, July 26: Buskers’ Day. Showcase for local talent who will be performing on Scar Top, between 11am and 3pm. Saturday, August 2: Medieval Day. The Dawn of Chivalry, a medieval battle re-enactment group will perform between 11am and 3pm on Scar Top. There will also be an interactive display of arms and armour, whilst Caliban’s Dream, a duo of medieval musicians, perform historical music on period instruments. There will also be a historical display in the Methodist Church with Richard III enthusiasts on hand to help you learn about the slain king. Saturday, August 9: First World War Day. Free event between 11am and 3pm at Scar Top. People will be able to experience what school life was like during the war with a period headmaster. They will also be able to discover about life in Britain with demonstrations on washing period clothes, soaps used, bathing and “cleaning behind the ears”. There will also be the opportunity to watch Kando Arts’ Lives in Letters short films about the war, as well as the chance to take part in shadow theatre. Monday, August 25: Streets of Durham Festival. Between 11am and 3pm on Scar Top. The Castle will provide the backdrop of acrobats, street entertainers, musicians, artists and more showing off their skills. Saturday, August 30: Wild About Barney Family Fun Day on The Demesnes. Activities and crafts and the opportunity to learn of the work done by Heart of Teesdale Landscape Partnership.
