FREEDOM OF INFORMATiON ANALYSIS: So, this being Friday and all, we got another document dump from the Orland Park Public Library. These were responses to FOIA requests from early in September, so the Library is producing this stuff late after delaying it for weeks. Were uncovering a lot of ironic waste in this spending going on here. Take for instance the irony of sending Joy McFadden (the disgraced former Virtual Services manager who was forced to resign after she and her husband were caught attacking Library critics on Facebook this summer) on a trip to Cleveland to attend a Digipalooza 13 event. Let this sink in for a minute, and overlook for a second the fact that it is indeed every girls dream to go to Cleveland in August. If it was a Digipalooza event then shouldnt people be attending these things digitally? You know, over Skype or webcam? Shouldnt an event about technology be, you know, using technology to save taxpayers money? Looking into what was spent on this trip, we have found two receipts so far: one for conference hotel and meal costs ($469.61) and another for $60 worth of leaving Joys car at the airport while she was having the time of her life in Cleveland. This does not include what she spent on the plane ticket…or the conference attendance fees. This is just her hotel room, the delicious cuisine she consumed in Cleveland (the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame city), and leaving her car at the airport. And thats already $529.61 right there. Were looking for the other expenses for this, but the OPPL makes it hard to piece these things together. They hide receipts so that nothing is in proper order and nothing is grouped together, to make it harder to see everything that was spent on one event (or in this case, one fabulous trip to Cleveland). I wish I could go to Cleveland. But I cant afford it. If you work at the Orland Park Public Library, however, the words cant afford it dont seem to exist.
