FREEMASONRY AND KABBALAH – The Hebrew word Kabbalah derives from qibel, meaning “to receive”. It implies an oral tradition, as it was originally communicated from mouth to ear. Traditional Kabbalah explores the relationship between God (the Creator) and mankind (the creation). This relationship is explored in a variety of ways, including specialized techniques for drawing deeper meanings from the Hebrew Scriptures, as well as by meditative practices. Although the precise origins of Kabbalah are disputed, it is generally believed to have developed primarily in 13th century Spain, although Kabbalistic tradition assets that it existed as a corpus of secret knowledge held by the Biblical patriarchs. Advocates are able to point to Biblical passages and practices, as well as Jewish traditions, which are considered Kabbalistic. Among the secrets are methods of manipulating texts by rearranging letters and words to gain insight and/or inspiration. Focused meditation on divine names, as well as studying rabbinic literature and, in particular, certain mystical texts, such as the Zohar and the Sefer Yetzirah, are regular Kabbalistic practices.
