FRESH MEAT ON THE ROAD IN QUEEN STREET. Since I got the Mountain - TopicsExpress

FRESH MEAT ON THE ROAD IN QUEEN STREET. Since I got the Mountain Bike from dad, I sold my old bicycle to Terry Watson, he kept it sitting against the wall of the building under his window, some boys from the neighborhood wanted to borrow it from him so they can steal it. He wouldn’t let them have it, so they cut several spokes in the back wheel through the night. He wanted me to fix it for nothing, I refused, he ended up selling the bicycle as is to a pawnshop but lost on resale because of the cut spokes. There was a carrier and a smaller shopping basket on the mountain bike, so I didn’t need to buy them. I was riding my bike one morning to the city in the full peak hour traffic, when I came to Queen Street, the Prudential Building was on my left taking the whole block from George Street to North Quay, the Old Treasury Building was on my right with the island in the center cemented off. Right there I saw a heap of fresh meat sitting on the side of the road. It was scattered all over the place. There must have been about five kilograms of fresh pork sides and ribs. For some reason or other, I brought two plastic shopping bags with me. I don’t remember why now, but I had a reason for it. I hopped off the bicycle when I saw the meat, put the bike aside and picked up all the meat into the plastic bags, and put it in the shopping basket. I did what I was aiming to do and happily cycled home. I took the meat to the kitchen and was washing it at the kitchen sink when Mrs Wicks walked in on me. You got plenty of meat there she said. I found it was my reply. You found the meat? she said surprised, yes I found it. Where did you find it? It was sitting on the side of the road in the city, I don’t know how it got to be there, either someone dropped it, or it may have fallen from a truck. More like it I said, it may have fallen off a truck. I had my own shopping bags, so I got off the bicycle and collected it up before an accident happens, cars and buses were trying to avoid it by driving around it to the left. I picked it up to clear the road. It’s fresh meat as you can see. It may have been a meat truck from the abatoirs delivering to butchers, the back door may have accidentally opened itself as it happens sometimes and the meat fell off. The driver just left it there and kept on going. The insurance will pay for that she said. They always do I replied, things regularly fall from trucks and are left behind, nobody bothers to pick them up, so I get them for myself, most of the time it’s always food. The meat would have been wasted if you didn’t collect it up she said. It would I answered, it’s good food, already cut up into sections. I finished washing it, put it back in the plastic bags and put it in the freezer, in my fridge. I had plenty of meat without having to buy it.
