FRIDAY, 10/3/14 POETRY. Job 42:1-6 “I Had Only Heard About You Before!” (By Barry) WORSHIP: “Eyes Like Fire” https://youtube/watch?v=FQ9tXZfpF4A SCRIPTURE: blueletterbible.org/Bible.cfm?b=Job&c=42&t=NLT Some of us started reading through the book of Job way back in July of 2013! I have always throughout that is is a book that starts great, and ends great, and has a LOT of tough thoughts in between. But now, we are just about at the conclusion of the book, and I’m excited! If you have been with us through the entire book, you will remember that God had called Job the most righteous person in the world. Satan had challenged this, and told God he could get Job to mess up. God allowed Satan to try, and Job was absolutely wiped out. Job was “struck” in lots of ways. He lost his riches, he lost all his children, and he was struck with disease. His wife told him he should just curse God and die, and all his friends came to support him-and then told him it was all his fault! And Job, even though he was wounded and confused, never gave in. He never quit. He DID do a bit of complaining, though, didn’t he? As his friends continued to blame Job, he began to wonder himself why he was going through such a rough time. In fact, he even begins to question God. God finally comes to Job and reminds Job that it is God Himself who is in charge. He asks Job some really tough questions, and in the end, Job simply covers his mouth, and realizes exactly who he is talking to. God continues to provide examples to Job of God’s greatness, and for the last two weeks, we looked at the two mysterious creatures, Behemoth and Leviathan, as even more “evidence” of God’s creativity and power. And finally, as we read about in today’s passage, something fantastic happens. Up to this point, Job thought he knew about God. But now, HE HAS SEEN HIM. Job’s life will never be the same. All the losses he had experienced (and they were terribly painful!) no longer even seem to matter. Job has been introduced to God, and he is absolutely changed. You might be reading this and saying, “Sure, if I SAW God, I would be changed, too!” But I don’t think that’s the point of this passage. Instead, what I get out of it is, Job THOUGHT he knew God, but after incredible pain in his life, and bitter disappointment, he finally DID know God. Once he did, that’s all that mattered to him! FURTHER THOUGHTS & QUESTIONS: —1. Which verse from our six verses today stands out the most to you? Why? —2. Have you ever been in the position that Job was? In Verse 6, he says, “I take back everything I said!” Have you ever been so wrong about something that it was embarrassing? What was it? —3. How well is Job describing YOU in this passage? Do you know about God, or have you MET Him? This is a HUGE question! —4. We didn’t discuss the thing Job said at the very end, concerning “dust and ashes.” Any thoughts on what he was referring to? —5. Job lost so much. But he discovered God. Are you willing to give up ANYTHING in order to truly know God? —6. Our worship song today describes a person who cannot resist the presence of God. What do you think of the song, and what do you think of those words? (What does it MEAN to not be able to resist His presence?) PRAYER: Are there things you would NOT want to give up for God? You don’t have to tell us about them. Instead, can I ask you to spend a few minutes talking to God about them? He already knows your heart, so you might as well be honest!
