FRIDAY, 25 OCTOBER 2013 08:00 On This Day: Oct 25 WRITTEN BY ROBERT BOYLE WE look at some of the memorable moments that have happened on this day in the remarkable history of Rangers. Today we remember League Cup wins over Celtic and Aberdeen, birthdays of three former Rangers players and a friendly against Blackburn Rovers in the seventh year of Rangers Football Clubs existence. On this day in 1975, the League Cup Final between Rangers and Celtic was kicking off at the unfamiliar time of 1pm. Jock Stein and Jock Wallaces sides went head to head at Hampden in the 30th Scottish League Cup and it was won by a single goal scored by a magnificent diving header by Alex MacDonald. Two fortuitous goals for Rangers were enough for a 2:1 win in the League Cup Final on this day in 1992. Stuart McCall opened the scoring early in the match after Ian Durrant had fired a pass onto the boot of a Dons defender which cannoned off the chest of Theo Snelders into the path of McCall to lash home. Duncan Shearer levelled the game in the second half before a Davie Robertson cross was headed into the Aberdeen net by Dons defender Gary Smith to give Rangers the silverware. Elsewhere, three former Rangers players were born on this day in history, Bob McPhail, Oleg Salenko and Lionel Charbonnier. McPhail scored 230 league goals for Rangers which was a record which stood for over 50 years until a certain Ally McCoist claimed it and will surely hold onto it forever. McPhails record of six Scottish Cup wins with Rangers is shared only by Celtics Jimmy McMenemy and Billy McNeill and is unlikely to be surpassed in the current climate of continual player movement. You can read McPhails Hall of Fame profile here. Russian Oleg Salenko was signed from Spanish side Valencia after starring in the 1994 World Cup, scoring a record five goals in a single match against Cameroon. Since retiring from football, Salenko took up a post coaching the Russian beach football team! Lionel Charbonnier joined Rangers in July 1998, just four days after the French national side he was part of had won the World Cup on home soil. After an impressive (and flamboyant!) start to his Rangers career, the French goalkeeper suffered cruciate ligament damage which forced manager Dick Advocaat to move to sign German keeper Stefan Klos. In 1879, Rangers took on English side Blackburn Rovers in a friendly match at Alexandra Meadows, Blackburn in front of 2,000 supporters winning 4:1. One of the clubs founding fathers, Peter Campbell played for Blackburn briefly in the 1879/80 season before retiring from football, however he didnt play for either side in this friendly.
