FRIDAY FACT: Following the end of World War I, in February and March 1919 the Indiana legislature passed two laws banning German from being taught in any public, private or parochial schools (other foreign languages were allowed). Teachers who violated this law could be jailed for up to 6 months and fined up to $100.
