FROM BEYOND THE ARC By: Police Chief Inspector Rico C Santotome Jr (OS), RN, MPM Up Next For Manny: BIR This week will be a very busy one for all taxpayers and government workers like yours truly while we try to beat the deadline of filing our respective income tax returns as well as in submitting our Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Networth (SALN). Otherwise, we will have to face the repercussions of our inaction! Same goes true with newly crowned World Boxing Organization welterweight titleholder Manny Pacquiao who is also the Lone District representative of the impoverished province of Sarangani down South aside from his being the so-called Peoples Champ in the world of professional boxing. It can be noted that after a total of 63 fights in the punch-for-pay business since the mid-90s, the Pambansang Kamao has accumulated billions of pesos in winnings in beating the likes of Ricky Hatton, Oscar dela Hoya, Josh Clottey, Miguel Cotto, Juan Manuel Marquez, Erik Morales, Marco Antonio Barrera and lately, Brandon Rios and Timothy Bradley. His unanimous decision victory over the erstwhile undefeated American Bradley vindicated Pacquiao after losing their first meeting in 2012 in yielding the WBO welterweight crown via a controversial split decision loss to the cocky US simonpure. Good thing Manny won handily this time to reclaim the title. In disposing of Bradley, Pacquiao earned $20 million as against the Americans $6 million winnings for defending the title albeit in a losing cause. In June 2012, Manny won $26 million despite losing to Bradley while overall, since turning pro in 1995, Pacquiao has pocketed more than $300 million in winnings. Thats a hefty sum but of course, it carries with it a heavy cut in as much as taxes is taked about and for sure, Bureau of Internal Revenue Commissioner Kim Henares and her office will be painstakingly run after Manny in their quest for the proper payment of taxes up to the last cent for the Kibawe, Bukidnon-born prized fighter. His latest winnings in the Bradley II fight is worth more than P800 million, a hefty prize indeed! I just dont know if his share in the pay-per-view aspect of the match is already included but anyhow, thats one helluva winnings for just 12 rounds of boxing in the worlds gambling capital-Las Vegas! I know Manny is a very responsible and law-abiding citizen of the country and theres no doubt about it, hell try to settle his tax dues as soon as he returns to the Philippines this Holy Week. Come to think of it, Manny has plans for re-election in 2016 or maybe, run for a higher post like the Senate or even the vice presidency two years from now.... What was dismaying during the Pacquiao-Bradley II title fight was Mommy Dionisias acts near ringside after she was caught live on US television cursing Mannys American foe while the fight was in progress. She was likewise seen holding a cross (or a rosary?) and a prayer booklet while uttering words and pointing her finger to what boxing fans believed was Bradley. Anyway, Pacquiao has been vindicated, he has reclaimed the WBO welterweight title from Bradley and he has once again proved to all and sundry that he is still a force to reckon with atop the ring, no questions raised about his feat. But as a responsible taxpayer, Manny must settle all his tax dues with the BIR in order to complete his boxing achievements before finally calling it a day! Remember, the taxes we pay serve as the lifeblood of the country in the implementation of government projects and the delivery of basic services to the Filipino people...
