FROM MIRS: On This Day In Michigan History On July 31, 1924, the Michigan State Department of Highways began offering a car ferry service to bridge the gap between the Upper and Lower peninsulas for motorists. The ferry service ceased when the Mackinac Bridge opened in 1957. Before that, the service was the only one of its kind offered by a state highway department. It came out of a public furor over the high prices and lack of reliability of ferry services operated by railroad companies. Source: Michigan Every Day
