FROM THE NEWSROOM: An unforeseen problem has temporarily stopped Canterbury from installing solar panels on the Elementary Schools roof in that town. Superintendent Dr. Louis Knapton revealed at a Board of Education meeting last night that, upon inspection by structural engineers, it was determined that the solar panels would have to be drilled into the roof, instead of clipped on, as previously planned. With over one hundred holes in the schools roof, Knapton and the Board were concerned with the many problems this may present, including leakage over time and having that number of holes in the roof if the solar panels were ever taken removed or the contract ended. Knapton expressed concern about impacts to the warranty on the roof, which is only a year and a half old. For now, the solar panel installation has been halted. The next step is for the Facilities Committee to meet with Greenskies – the company installing the solar panels – and discuss the next step. Knapton is considering having the solar panels installed in an array on the ground instead of on the schools roof to avoid complications. A few trees would need to be cut down to allow for more sunlight, should the altered plan be accepted. Tune in for the full report.
