FROM THE NEWSROOM: Backed up by several Board of Education and faculty members, Woodstock Superintendent Dr. Frank Baran presented the proposed $17.4 million education budget to the Board of Finance at a recent meeting, with education officials stating that nearly all of the $1.4 million increase is either mandated or contractual non-discretionary funding. Of that figure, $470,000 of it pertains to special education costs, while almost $440,000 deals with health insurance premiums and claims. Expanding on the rise of special education costs, Baran said that it is due to new students, program changes and state approved tuition increases. As reported, other areas of significant change include tuition raises for Woodstock Academy and contracted salary increases. David Hosmer, the chairman of the Board of Finance, says that he understands that this budget contains a majority of fixed expenses, but his concern is whether or not the citizens will accept it, and that without the town budget, the board doesnt have the complete picture. The $17,486,890 education budget has not been accepted by the Board of Finance yet, and it is currently unknown if any cuts will need to be made to the current figure. Tune in for more details.
